Sheri Madigan, PhD, Director, Determinants of Child Development Lab

Dr. Madigan is a Canada Research Chair in the Determinants of Child Development. She joined the Department of Psychology at the University of Calgary in 2015 and is currently directing the Determinants of Child Development Lab, a lab that is dedicated to conducting research on the multidimensional influences that shape children's developmental trajectories. Dr. Madigan is a principal-investigator on several research projects on children's development supported by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), Canada Research Chairs (CRC) program, and the Alberta Children's Hospital Foundation

Nicole Racine, PhD, Postdoctoral Research Fellow

Dr. Nicole Racine is a clinical psychologist and postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Calgary in the Department of Psychology. Her program of research focuses on understanding maternal, familial, and environmental factors that influence early socioemotional development in children. In particular, her fellowship  is focusing on the transmission of maternal childhood adversity and maternal stress in the pre- and postpartum periods on mental health and school readiness in early childhood. She has a strong clinical and research interest in infant mental health as well as parent-child interactions and is passionate about partnering with community organizations. Nicole completed her PhD in Clinical Developmental Psychology at York University in Toronto and her residency in Clinical Child and Pediatric Psychology at Alberta Children’s Hospital in Calgary. Her fellowship is funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada and the Alberta Children’s Hospital Research Institute.

Rochelle Hentges, PhD, Postdoctoral Research Fellow

Dr. Rochelle Hentges is a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Calgary and the Owerko Centre for Neurodevelopmental Research at the ACHRI. She worked for several years as a journalist before pursuing her Ph.D. in developmental psychology at the University of Rochester. Her research focuses on examining how early contextual adversity (e.g., interparental aggression, harsh parenting, poverty) influence child development, with a specific focus on the moderating influence of temperament. She recently finished a post-doctoral position at the University of Pittsburgh. Rochelle will be working on the All Our Babies cohort study to examine the influence of early maternal stress on child socio-emotional and cognitive development.

Brae Anne McArthur, PhD, Postdoctoral Research Fellow

Dr. Brae Anne McArthur is a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Calgary working in the Determinants of Child Development Lab. She received her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology: Applied Developmental Emphasis from the University of Guelph and completed her internship in Clinical Child and Pediatric Psychology at Alberta Children’s Hospital in Calgary. Dr. McArthur’s primary research is in the area of developmental psychopathology. Her current work focuses on understanding the transactional relationship between parental factors and youth risk and resiliency factors to identify mechanisms that contribute to the development and varied manifestation of mood disorders. Her fellowship is funded by the Alberta Children’s Hospital Research Institute (ACHRI).  

Anh Ly, MA, Research Coordinator

Anh is a doctoral student in medical anthropology at the University of California, Riverside. She is happy to be back in Calgary where she completed her previous graduate studies and where she formerly worked as a Research Coordinator/Associate on several Aboriginal health projects for the Department of Family Medicine and Alberta Health Services. Her current research interests include: anthropology of infectious disease, global health and governance, colonial medicine, science and technology studies, and ethnography of Southeast Asia.

Jessica Cooke, Graduate Student, PhD Candidate (Clinical Psychology)

Jessy is a PhD candidate in Clinical Psychology at the University of Calgary. Her research interests include understanding how dysfunctional parent-child relationships contribute to children’s risk for psychosocial, emotional, and biobehavioral problems, and developing appropriate methods to improve child mental health and parent-child relationships. Jessy will help work on an assessment tool for identifying maladaptive parenting in high-risk populations.

Camille Mori, Graduate Student, MSc II (Clinical Psychology)

Camille recently graduated from a combined undergraduate degree program at the University of Calgary with a major in psychology with honours and a major in dance. Her research interests include lifespan psychology and understanding how environmental, social, and intergenerational factors impact development. She is also interested in knowledge translation; specifically, in how to best communicate research across disciplines and to the wider public. Camille will be focusing on antecedents and outcomes of sexting among adolescents.

Rachel Eirich, Graduate Student, MSc I (Clinical Psychology)

Rachel is a graduate student in Clinical Psychology at the University of Calgary. She is interested in examining the role of screen time on children's socioemotional development, as well as how technology can interfere with caregiver-child interactions and attachment relationships. 

Chloe Devereux, Research Assistant and Lab Coordinator

Chloe has her Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Psychology from University of Calgary and recently completed her honours thesis under the supervision of Dr. Hentges and Dr. Madigan. She is interested in child psychology and mental health, and hopes to pursue graduate studies. In the DCD lab, she is currently working on a project examining associations between child language development and psychopathology.

Logan van Roessel, Alberta Innovates Health Solutions Summer Student

Logan is completing her final year of her BSc in psychology with honours at the University of Calgary under the guidance of Dr. Madigan and Dr. Racine. Her interests include child psychology and the intersection of physical and mental health. She is completing her AIHS summer studentship with Dr. Racine, exploring adverse childhood experiences and maternal health at the Riley Park Maternity Clinic. Logan also works in the Individual and Team Performance Lab studying pediatric resuscitation teams. In the future, she hopes to enter graduate studies in Clinical Psychology.

Ciana Anhorn, Markin Undergraduate Research Program Summer Student

Ciana is a fourth year Bachelor of Science student in Psychology who is completing her honours thesis under the guidance of Dr. Madigan and Dr. McArthur. Her interests include the impacts that screens have on child development, as well as childhood adversity and development. She is a recipient of the Markin Summer Studentship in which she is working on a meta-analysis examining the impacts of screens on children’s language development.

Whitney Ereyi-Osas

Whitney is a third-year Health and Society major at the University of Calgary. Her interests lie in child health and development, and she intends to pursue a career in the field of pediatrics. She is currently a research assistant in the DCD lab exploring the relationship between maternal stress and child development. Whitney will be completing her honours thesis under the supervision of Dr. Racine and Dr. Madigan this fall.

Julianna Watt

Julianna is currently in her final year of completing a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology at McGill University. Her interests include language development and bilingualism, as well as intelligence and learning disabilities in children. In the future, Julianna hopes to pursue graduate studies in School and Applied Child Psychology at the University of Calgary.

Fatima Shah

Fatima is a third year Bachelor of Science student in Psychology. Her interests include abnormal child psychology and development. In the future, Fatima hopes to pursue graduate studies.

Idy Akpan

Idy just completed her 3rd year of her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. Her research interests include developmental psychology and mental health of children. In the future, Idy intends to pursue graduate studies in Clinical Psychology.

Jaedyn Paarup

Jaedyn recently completed her undergraduate degree in Psychology at the University of Calgary and hopes to pursue a Master's degree in Speech Language Pathology. Her research interests include identifying factors that may promote or delay the onset of language in childhood. She is working on meta-analyses in the lab examining how screen time affects child language development.

Paolo Pador

Paolo is currently in the fourth year of his Bachelor of Science in Psychology and hopes to pursue graduate studies in School and Applied Child Psychology. His research interests include child psychology and language development. He is currently working on meta-analyses examining the effects of screen time on language development. 

Sophia Lu

Sophia is a first year undergraduate student majoring in Biomedical Sciences at the University of Calgary. Her interests include child psychology and mental health. This summer, she will be participating in a meta-analysis examining the impact of screen time on children’s development.
